Software, IT jobs is hit? Most coding tasks might be replaced by AI within 1-2 years

Software engineering roles could face significant disruption sooner than many expect. According to Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic—an AI company focused on safety and alignment. Artificial intelligence may take over the majority of software coding tasks within just a few years.

Amodei shared these views at the World Economic Forum in Davos during a discussion on how AI is reshaping work and society. He explained that engineers at Anthropic have already changed their workflows. Rather than writing code manually from scratch, many now use AI systems to generate code and spend their time reviewing, refining, and validating the results.



He noted that this method is already improving productivity and accelerating development. Amodei added that the next phase—where AI manages the full coding process end to end—may be closer than many realize. In his assessment, rapid improvements in AI models could soon allow them to perform nearly all tasks currently handled by software engineers.

These comments have reignited concerns about job security within the technology sector. Coding has traditionally been viewed as a reliable and in-demand skill, but AI-powered tools are lowering the barrier to software creation. New platforms allow users to describe their needs in everyday language while AI handles the underlying code generation.

Amodei also addressed the broader pace of AI advancement. While acknowledging that exact timelines are difficult to predict, he said progress continues to exceed expectations, even among experts. Improvements in AI-generated code and faster research cycles are accelerating development, although advances in hardware and chip manufacturing still take longer.

The conversation included other prominent industry figures, such as Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, and explored how AI could impact employment across many sectors, not just technology.

Anthropic’s own AI system, Claude, has contributed to this shift. Over the past year, it has developed from a basic conversational tool into a system capable of assisting with coding, editing, testing software, and performing simple computer-based tasks.

While some analysts believe AI will primarily enhance developer productivity, others warn that entry-level software roles may be most vulnerable. Amodei’s remarks suggest that the effects of AI on software engineering may arrive much faster than many developers anticipate
